2008 Spring Alumni Game Update

Rugby Alumni and Friends,

For those of you who took part in this year’s weekend extravaganza, you don’t require this letter to tell that a great time was had by all! For those of you who missed it, you need to mark your calendars now for the first weekend in May next year so you don’t have to live vicariously through this communication…

The weather cooperated just like we placed an order when the skies cleared for both golf and Saturday’s game. This year’s golf tournament was another incredible success thanks to the trio of Joe McCrudden, Dave Feenan and Tom Thornton. We raised over $13,000 which was our best year ever! That money, as you know, will be put back into the Siena community with donations to Saints Alive!, Catholic Charities and other Siena-sanctioned causes. We also need to thank and recognize the generosity of several individuals who donated gifts that made this year’s raffle a win for many. Tom McGovern, ’86 came through again with Superbowl tickets, and Chris Baldwin, ’85 provided Great Escape tickets and the coveted NFL football that was signed by all three Mannings. Danny Sullivan, ’84 provided Red Sox and Mets box seats while Sean Kelly (Terry McShane's cousin) came through with his usual NBA attire package!

Saturday kicked off with Father Kevin celebrating our traditional mass and welcoming Henry Joyce into our Siena Rugby community. While his older brother was not happy with the lack of attention, the rest of us, including the Joyce Family, enjoyed the service. This year fans were treated to two great rugby games. First, the growing lady alumni beat the current squad 10-5 with Jolene Johnston, ’04 acting as the alumni standout. The men, led by perennial favorite, Tony Leva, (’90) beat the College side 35-22 in a hard fought but well executed match. The after game festivities saw the ageless one, Tom Harvey, ’79 receive the coveted alumni award for his unwavering commitment to both the men’s and ladies programs, alumni planning and overall generosity to Siena.

At this point, we’re planning a holiday get together and possible rugby game targeted for Saturday, December 6th (Snowbowl ’08). Please stay tuned for details to follow. Also, the woman alumni (with some help from the current college side) are playing in the Rockaway Seven's tournament on June 14, and the Jo Jo Moore tournament on June 21 at the New York Military Academy in Cornwall, NY. If you can show up to show some support it will be appreciated.
