The Siena Rugby Alumni Memorial Scholarship Fund

Two former rugby players, Terence McShane ('86) and Michael "Cool" Taddonio ('84) were lost in the attack on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. Terence was a NYC Firefighter and Michael was employed by Eurobrokers, Inc. Both leave behind three young children.

After the tragic and senseless losses of Michael and Terence, many who belong to this community reached out to one another to offer and receive condolences, comfort, and possibly some reassurance. And we learned that none of us was alone - that we were all re-examining what was important in our lives and we had all reflected on the value of staying connected with friends and old acquaintances.

While we all would like to turn back time and change not only the outcome of that tragic day but other events in our lives as well, we realize we cannot. This forces us to reflect on the past and, hopefully, draw strength, courage, and a purpose to improve the days ahead. It was once said, "We pass this way but once. If there is any good that we can do, let us do it now for we may not have the chance again."

In this spirit, we ask for your support in for the Siena Rugby Alumni Memorial Scholarship in memory of Terence and Michael and all other deceased Alumni Rugby players. Our goal is to raise sufficient funds to provide two $3,000 per year scholarships in perpetuity. Over time, these scholarships will increase in value due to the growth of the funds.

The scholarship will go to two (2) Siena rugby players based upon the following criteria:

  • Financial Need
  • Academic Ability
  • Commitment to the sport and the Club
  • A minimum of two semesters playing rugby

The College will administer the scholarship. Elected Alumni Rugby representatives will annually nominate recipients. If any of the children of Terence or Michael attend Siena, the scholarships will automatically default to them during their tenure.

As stated earlier, this scholarship is in perpetuity, so the benefits of our efforts will live on. Many of us truly believe this will be the foundation on which the Club's future success, both on and off the field, will be built. This effort should also be viewed as a way to give back to the sport and Club that helped to shape your Siena experience, while at the same time memorializing all deceased Alumni Rugby players.

If you are interested in contributing, we ask that you to print, fill out, sign, and return a Letter of Intent. Checks should be made payable to Siena College. Please note Siena Rugby Scholarship in the memo section.

This is one of those opportunities as we pass through life to reach out and do some good. Let's not miss it.
